An arteriogram is a diagnostic test that allows your doctor to look at your arteries with an X-ray machine and contrast dye to highlight your arteries. A variation of an arteriogram is an aortogram which allows your doctor to look specifically at your aorta.
The Arteriogram Procedure
Arteriograms are performed under local anesthetic, meaning you stay awake but feel minimal discomfort. You may receive an IV to remain hydrated and receive medication. A vascular surgeon then inserts a small needle in your groin and uses a device called a catheter (ultra-thin, spaghetti-like tube) to access your arteries and see them on a special X-ray machine. Once the doctor reaches the blockage site, contrast dye is added to see your blood flow in that area and take X-ray images.
