About DEAC

Mission

The mission of DEAC is to provide high-quality, free health care to underserved individuals within the Piedmont-Triad area in a sustainable manner, while creating a unique service-oriented learning experience for the students of Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Vision

The vision of DEAC is to provide equal access to health care for those who would not otherwise receive treatment, while also striving to address social, economic and cultural determinants of health by bridging access to existing community resources, facilitating interpretation services and providing food and financial assistance.

History

DEAC is a student-run, free medical clinic that provides high-quality patient care to local underserved communities in and around Winston-Salem. DEAC is fully accredited by the North Carolina Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, the network of health care facilities that offer free and affordable health care throughout the state, and maintains a 501©3 status.

The concept of the student-run free health clinic was envisioned by a small group of medical students at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 2006. In 2008, DEAC held its first clinic.

In 2016, the clinic served more than 250 patients. This free clinic provides routine primary health care to the local underserved community, and specialty care and testing when needed. Students from Wake Forest medical, physician assistant, graduate and undergraduate programs work together under the supervision of volunteer licensed physicians, physician assistants and pharmacy residents.

Recently, students have been awarded grants for various health improvement initiatives implemented at DEAC, ranging from nutrition to smoking cessation.

The goals in creating DEAC were to fill a health care gap in the local community, to provide hands-on learning in a clinical setting, and to foster a culture which values providing health care to underserved populations.

Over the past year, 191 volunteers contributed more than 1,400 hours of service.
