Holiday Prep: Scam Alerts, Poinsettia Magic at Mitchell’s Nursery, and Cozy Soup Recipes

November 2024

The upcoming holidays or even a natural disaster can bring out the very best in people, unfortunately it can also be a time that scammers are their busiest trying to take advantage of a person’s good nature and desire to help others. Attendees of November’s AgingWell will hear from Jessica Spencer, JD, Assistant District Attorney for Forsyth County on “Common Scams in Forsyth County”. So, whether you live around the corner or across the country you will NOT want to miss this timely and important presentation. Scammers are smart but YOU can be smarter!

With the holiday season just around the corner, there is no better time for us to visit Mitchell’s Nursery and Greenhouse in King, NC. As people from this area know, Mitchell’s is the absolute best place in North Carolina to go for the most diverse and spectacular selection of Poinsettias! They feature traditional reds, vibrant whites, and unique pinks, with each color a lovely rebellion against the gray of winter! Join Jim and Judy Mitchell as they give us a VIP tour of the greenhouse and teach us about the genetics and environment that have created these magnificent flowers!

Fall is definitely in the air and with that comes the yearning for warm and savory soups. So, whether you are looking for an interesting soup course for a large family gathering or a hearty bowl of soup for a weeknight dinner, a delicious soup doesn’t just warm the body but can truly warm the soul! Join home chef and Wake Forest University School of Medicine’s very own Don McClain, MD, PhD, as he demonstrates how easy it is to prepare a delicious Celery Root Soup that can be part of a large meal or, with the addition of some good bread and a salad, the perfect weeknight dinner.

While it is FREE to participate in the AgingWell Series, we ask that anyone who wants to participate please e-mail us at: AgingWellSeries@WakeHealth.edu and you will be sent the link to join the meeting.

It is especially important for first-time attendees to register so that you will receive the follow-up information from each program which includes:

  • Recipes from the cooking demonstrations
  • Notes from the presentations
