Sun Safety, Lemon Spaghetti, and Bird-Friendly Gardens

April 2025

This online Series is sponsored by Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Sticht Center for Healthy Aging and Alzheimer’s Prevention and is presented from 5:30-6:30 pm on the second Tuesday of each month via Zoom.

We have all heard how important it is to protect our skin from getting too much sun but what exactly are the consequences?  Melanoma, while only affecting 1% of all skin cancers may be the least common but is the also the deadliest. In 2025 in the United States, it’s estimated that there will be over 200,000 cases of melanoma diagnosed. So, what can you do to make sure you don’t become part of this number? Attendees of April’s AgingWell will hear from Christine Ahn, MD, FAAD, Assistant Professor, Departments of Dermatology and Pathology, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, who will discuss the risk, prevalence and what we all can do to better protect our skin and maybe even save our life!

Warm Spring days (and evenings) call for light and healthy meals that are also delicious and there’s one place in town that delivers on all accounts- Betty on Burke. While Betty may be a relatively new name in the Winston-Salem dining scene, they are the sister restaurant to the ever-popular Mozelle’s. Building on his Mozelle’s experience, chef and co-owner Jay Pierce, is committed to serving meals that are innovative, healthy, locally sourced, and memorable. For April’s AgingWell, Chef Jay will be demonstrating how to create his signature Lemon Spaghetti. This dish is not only delicious, but also wonderfully healthy and easy enough to prepare for a weeknight dinner and elegant enough to serve at your next dinner party!

The outdoor spaces around our homes are often places of enjoyment and relaxation but did you know that these spaces also provide critical shelter, food and water to our feathered neighbors? Rebecca Craps, Extension Agent specializing in the Environment and Natural Resources with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Forsyth County Office, will share how easy and rewarding it can be to make your outdoor space more bird friendly. Whether providing a safe resting and refueling stop-over for seasonally migrating birds or ensuring that our year-round feathered friends have what they need to flourish and raise their young, attendees of AgingWell will learn the many  meaningful and affordable things we can do to create a more bird friendly environment.
