Brain Health & Dementia Prevention: MIND Diet, Nutrition, Lifestyle Habits and Healthy Aging Tips

June 2026

AgingWell attendees are invited to join Jennifer Ventrelle, MS, RDN, Assistant Professor at Rush University Medical Center and Co-Founder of The Official MIND Diet, for an engaging presentation on the powerful connection between nutrition and lifestyle habits on brain health. Drawing from the latest research, including findings from the MIND Diet trials and the U.S. POINTER study, Jennifer will share practical, evidence-based strategies to support cognitive health and reduce dementia risk through nutrition, physical activity, cognitive and social connection, and other everyday habits. Attendees will leave with realistic tools and simple habit changes that can help support a healthier brain and healthier aging at any stage of life.

Creating memorable meals that are not just delicious but can also play a key role in an older adult’s ability to achieve and maintain healthy bodies and healthy brains has long been the focus of Chef Jolie Shafer. As the Executive Chef at Arbor Acres Retirement Community, Chef Shafer has worked tirelessly to elevate the resident’s dining experience and was the recipient of the National Executive Chef of the Year in 2024 by the Senior Dining Association. For June, AgingWell attendees will learn how to create one of her signature dishes, seared salmon with blueberry gastrique on fresh spinach salad with toasted walnuts.

As many know, Winston-Salem is known as the “City of Arts and Innovation” and you don’t have to look further than the Trade Street area to see living proof of this namesake! Located in the heart of Trade Street at 564 North Trade is the Artworks Gallery. This ever-changing art space was founded in 1984 and was established as a cooperative to provide local artists a dedicated space to show and sell their work. This month AgingWell attendees will hear from founding member, Alix Hitchcock, featured artist, Sujata Aher and wood turner, Karl Stauber on the history and current artwork exhibits.
