The diagnostic neurology laboratory at Wake Forest Baptist Health provides patients with a convenient location for undergoing clinical tests for a variety of neurological diseases and conditions. Our team is dedicated to providing prompt diagnostic testing for patients and their physicians to help enable an accurate diagnosis and, when necessary, an effective treatment plan.
Our Services
The diagnostic neurology lab provides 4 categories of neurological tests:
- Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS), which are used to evaluate patients with suspected nerve or muscle disease.
- Electroencephalography (EEG), which evaluates the electrical activity in the brain. EEG can help detect and diagnose problems such as seizure disorders, stroke and brain tumors.
- Evoked potential (EP), which measures the electrical activity of the brain in response to stimulation of sensory nerve pathways. EP is used to evaluate and detect problems caused by damage, or demyelination, of nerve pathways.
- Neuro ultrasound, including carotid ultrasound and transcranial ultrasound, which is primarily used to evaluate patients who have had or are at risk of having strokes and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs).
We also provide services that include:
- Diagnostic testing of laryngeal nerve and voice disorders
- EMG-guided injections of botulinum toxin for patients with spasticity and dystonia
- Needle muscle biopsy
- Repetitive stimulation testing and single-fiber EMG testing to evaluate disorders of the neuromuscular junction, such as myasthenia gravis
- Testing of the autonomic nervous system
- Ultrasound studies of the nerves and muscles
In addition, our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, the most modern in North Carolina, is dedicated to confirming a diagnosis of epilepsy and pinpointing seizure activity and origin.
