Minimally Invasive Surgery
A majority of the surgical procedures performed at Lexington Medical Center utilize a practice known as minimally invasive surgery. These procedures involve fewer, smaller incisions than open surgery, and sometimes, no incisions at all. It requires specialized instruments - including tiny video cameras and digitally enhanced display of the surgical area. Some procedures utilize computer guidance technology in order to achieve an even greater degree of precision for delicate procedures.
Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery or laparoscopy is a form of minimally invasive surgery in which a small incision is made in the abdominal wall through which an instrument called a laparoscope is inserted. The laparoscope has a tiny video camera enabling the surgeon to see inside the abdomen without a large open surgical incision. The surgical area is magnified on a TV monitor.
The surgeon makes a few small incisions that are each about one-quarter to one-half inch long and inserts several small, thin instruments with which to operate. Lexington Medical Center physicians are regularly performing complex surgeries that once required large incisions.
The result of laparoscopic surgery is faster recovery, reduced scarring, less discomfort and highly effective surgical treatment.
da Vinci Surgical System
Lexington Medical Center uses the da Vinci Xi Surgical System® – a minimally invasive robotic technology that's an alternative to traditional open surgery (through one large incision) and conventional laparoscopy.
This advanced surgical robot makes it possible to treat a broader range of conditions using a minimally invasive technique with enhanced vision, accuracy, dexterity and precision than possible with traditional approaches.
