Our Services
We offer a comprehensive industrial program to assist employees in returning to the job safely. The program is also designed to assist the employer in creating a safe workplace for employees, and to provide injury prevention programs.
Services offered include:
- Functional Capacity Evaluation - The FCE is a measure of what work and daily tasks a person is able to perform. The FCE is used to determine an injured employee's maximum safe work ability. Specific restrictions as well as whether or not an employee can return to a specific job are determined.
- Work Conditioning - Work Conditioning is designed for injured employees who have been out of work for several weeks, and are no longer in the acute injury stage. These employees, however cannot yet meet the physical demands of the job. The Work Conditioning program is 4 hours per day and consists of flexibility, endurance, strengthening and conditioning exercises, as well as education and job simulation.
- Pre-Work Screens (PWS) - A PWS is a physical screen performed post-offer of employment. The PPS provides the employer with valuable base-line physical status information upon hiring in the event an employee sustains an injury in the future. It also determines if the applicant poses a "high risk" to the health and safety of himself/herself or others that cannot be eliminated or reduced by reasonable accommodations.
- Physical Agility Test (PAT) - A PAT can identify if an applicant can safely perform essential functions of high-risk jobs such as heavy lifting. The PAT may be administered at any stage of the hiring process and helps the employers determine which applicants are the most qualified for the available position.
- Job Site Analysis - A JSA is used to assess the essential functions and physical demand characteristics of the job. The JSA examines the work site and makes recommendations to modify the work station or work situation to prevent work injury.
- Ergonomic Assessment - Information is gathered as to how a job is performed, how work stations are designed and how administrative policies effect job performances. This information is then analyzed and areas of concern for risk of injury to specific body parts are identified.
- Back Education Programs - This is an educational program to instruct employees and management in all aspects of back care. It can be in the format of a "train the trainer" program, back screening program, flex and stretch programs and onsite lifting/posture education sessions.
The Inpatient Rehab Center is a special place for people who still need around-the-clock nursing care, but its primary focus is physical rehabilitation. Our 16-bed unit at High Point Medical Center is designed for patients who need, and can tolerate, an average of 3 hours of therapy a day. In addition to our specialty-trained rehab nurses and nursing assistants, we offer a team of occupational, physical, speech and recreational therapists who help patients reach their goal - to go home as independently as possible. We also have a full time social worker to assist with the coordination of care and discharge planning.
A wide variety of patients benefit from a stay in our Inpatient Rehab Center:
- Patients who have had a stroke.
- Patients who have had an amputation.
- Patients who have had multiple fractures from a car accident.
- Patients who have had joint replacement surgery or a joint fracture.
- Patients who have a neurological condition, such as multiple sclerosis.
- Patients who have brain or spinal cord injuries.
Our Admission Process
Patients are referred to the Inpatient Rehab Center by their physicians. Most of our patients come from out hospital, and other surrounding hospitals. The final decision for all admissions is made by the Inpatient Rehab Center medical director, who ensures that all patients are at their optimum stage for intense rehabilitation. The admissions process also ensures insurance coverage and post-inpatient-rehab discharge planning. Admission is for patients 18 years of age and older.
Our Defining Difference
We prepare all patients’ treatment plans before they arrive on the unit. Upon checking in, patients will find a well-appointed, “home-like” environment — not a hospital setting. These private rooms have TVs, VCRs and DVD players, and refrigerators. Patients are expected to wash and dress in street or exercise clothes in the morning, participate in daily therapy and meal programs and work around the clock on their goals. At night, they are allowed to sleep (just like home) and are not awakened to take medications or for vital signs.
Our rehab team documents patients’ achievements daily and meets with patients at least weekly to review and update their individual treatment program. Families are encouraged to take an active role in helping patients reach their treatment goals. Some of our patients move into our Transition Suite 24 to 48 hours before discharge to “practice” their new independence under staff supervision. The Transition Suite allows patients and families to rehearse simple meal preparation and household tasks, including laundry, prior to going home.
Occupational Therapy enables patients to maximize their independence and activities of daily living, while recovering from hand injuries, a stroke or other conditions that impair function. These conditions can impair a person's ability to perform basic self care such as bathing and dressing, and/or returning to work or household tasks. Occupational Therapy uses adaptive techniques or adaptive equipment to return patients to functional living.
We offer programs such as:
- Hand Therapy - Well-established protocols are used to restore maximum hand function and enable quick return to work or life activities.
- Neuro Clinic - Focuses on life tasks and promotion of safety for patients with a variety of neuro diagnoses.
- Pediatric Program - Enhances children's abilities to perform age appropriate tasks such as dressing, handwriting and playing.

We are proud of our “kid- and family-friendly space.” We offer a dedicated pediatric waiting room and treatment areas, all within the convenience of our Rehab Center. We have a doctor-friendly referral process and on-site parking, registration and scheduling for the ease of the parents. Ours is the only comprehensive pediatric rehab treatment program in the greater High Point area.
All members of our Pediatric Rehab team have specialty training in pediatric rehabilitation. Our team can treat patients from premature babies through the teen-age years. We are capable of treating acute injuries such as fractures or long-term needs such as birth defects, autism, developmental delays and congenital illnesses. Our team also offers state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment tools and provides the physician with monthly updates. We pride ourselves on working closely with our families and physicians to set and obtain goals that are best for our children.
At High Point Medical Center, we do more than provide therapy for kids with special health care needs. We reach out to our community with several other pediatric-related programs. For instance, we serve as an Amtryke demo site and provide free evaluations of children to determine if they will benefit from a modified tricycle, called a “tryke.”

Specialized Therapeutic Approaches include:
- Education: Pain management strategies, breathing techniques, posture, mechanisms of pain, self-trigger point releases, bladder homeostasis, constipation management, toileting postures, urge suppression techniques, & bladder retraining.
- Biofeedback: For pelvic floor muscle retraining to help patients learn to strengthen or relax their pelvic floor muscles in order to improve bladder or bowel function and to decrease pelvic floor pain.
- Exercises: More than just Kegel’s! The focus can be strengthening exercises for weak pelvic floor muscles and weak abdominals (which supports the pelvic floor); strengthening for pre- and post-partum women; stretching exercises for relaxation of tight pelvic floor muscles; strengthening and/or stretching for improved posture or pelvic asymmetries; and core strengthening. Patient management can also incorporate vaginal weights, and functional electrical-stimulation for pelvic floor strengthening.
- Manual therapy is used to address joint and soft tissue dysfunction, trigger point releases, and visceral manipulation. This technique utilizes a specific placement of soft manual forces to encourage normal mobility, tone and motion of the viscera to impact associated disorders.
- Dry needling is utilized to help assist restoration of the muscle function (helping to manage urinary incontinence), and decrease or eliminate pain and normalize tissue sensitivity. Dry needling accomplishes this through reduction of trigger points which can be a source of referred pain in the abdominal and pelvic region in men and women.
- Modalities for pain management – including electrical stimulation, heat/cold, and Ultrasound.
