The Diabetes Education Program helps people with diabetes understand the disease, their treatment, and how to live a healthy life to minimize the adverse effects. The class is an essential resource for learning about the types of diabetes and how best to approach nutrition, medication, monitoring and other self-care needs. The program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.
Sessions are taught by one of our registered dietitians and a registered nurse who understand the challenges of diabetes and daily living. The program starts with introductory diabetes education classes where you set goals for managing the disease and maintaining health and well-being. Qualified health professionals will conduct follow-up sessions to help you chart and track your progress, reaffirming individual goals and getting you on the right track.
Classes are held in a group setting, and some of the things you will learn are:
- What is diabetes?
- Healthy eating
- Meal planning
- Preparing healthy meals at home
- The positive relationship between exercise and diabetes
- Medications
- Monitoring your progress
- Acute and chronic complications
- Risk reduction behaviors
- Goal setting for daily living
One-on-one consultation is available. The program is covered by most insurance companies. A physician referral is needed.
