Dr. Michael Hughes is board certified in pediatric orthopaedic surgery. Conditions he treats include scoliosis, broken bones, limb and foot deformities, limb length differences, neuromuscular spinal and limb deformities and hip dysplasias.

He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a member of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), the Pediatric Spine Study Group and the Scoliosis Research Society. He is on the editorial board of major research journals.

Dr. Hughes is an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He has introduced multiple novel and innovative surgical techniques to the region. He conducts research on scoliosis and pediatric spinal deformity, trauma and fracture care and surgeon performance and safety.

He received his bachelor’s degree at Vanderbilt University. He received his medical degree at the University of Miami, where he also completed residency in orthopaedic surgery. He completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Away from work, Dr. Hughes enjoys any and every outdoor activity with his wife, Olivia, who is also a doctor, and their kids. He loves to run and hike the trails of Pilot Mountain or Hanging Rock with their dog, Maple.
