Biography

I attended Swarthmore College and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. I completed two years of General Surgery residency at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, residency in Otolaryngology-Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, and a fellowship in Head & Neck Oncology.  While at Iowa, I earned a Master of Science Degree.

I established The Ear Center of Greensboro, PA in 1989 and practiced private practice otology and pediatric otolaryngology in Greensboro, NC for 37 years before joining the department as an otologist. I started one of the first cochlear implant programs in North Carolina and have taught multiple annual instruction courses at the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.

I served as the co-chair of the Cone Health Institutional Review Board for more than 30 years. From 2011-2016, I was appointed by the Governor of North Carolina as the physician member of the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists. I have served as an Adjunct Clinical Professor, Department of Communications, University of North Carolina-Greensboro and am currently a member of the Board of Visitors at UNC-G.

I am an inventor and have been granted three U.S. utility patents for medical innovations including the Kraus K-Helix Prostheses that are used around the world in the middle ear for ossicular chain reconstruction. I invented the Kraus Modified Schuring Ossicle Cup Prosthesis and the Kraus TM Microcut Forceps. My interests include middle ear mechanics, ossicular chain reconstruction, chronic ear surgery, stapedectomy, cochlear implants, and other hearing implants with the specific goal of improving hearing for patients of all ages.  An additional research interest for me is the science of magnetic nano-particles for targeted drug delivery.
