Biography

Dr. L. Andrew Koman is board certified in orthopaedic surgery. He specializes in the management of pediatric, congenital hand, upper extremity vascular disorders, chronic pain, pediatric orthopaedics, adult cerebral palsy and spasticity and peripheral nerve conditions.

He is a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, the Department of Pediatrics and the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Koman is the chair emeritus of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation.

His research interests include microcirculation and motor unit control.

Internationally recognized for his work, he is the namesake of the L. Andrew Koman, MD, Distinguished Southern Orthopaedist Award. He has been recognized as a Top Doctor by Castle Connolly and a Best Doctor by Business North Carolina. Dr. Koman’s awards include the A. Lee Osterman Excellence in Education Award from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), the Arthur H. Huene Memorial Award from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Clinical Research Award.

Dr. Koman holds memberships in the Orthopaedic Research Society, the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery, the International Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery and many others.

Dr. Koman received his medical degree at Duke University, where he completed residencies in orthopaedic surgery, general surgery and pediatrics, followed by a hand fellowship.

Outside of work, he enjoys golf, traveling and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
