Biography

Dr. Eleftherios Makris specializes in diseases and conditions affecting the liver, pancreas and digestive tract. His clinical interests include surgical oncology and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery, benign pancreatic and hepatobiliary lesions, pancreatic cancer, hepatobiliary cancer, gastrointestinal malignancies, gastric cancer and small bowel tumors.

He is an assistant professor of surgical oncology and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

From early in his medical training, he was drawn to the complexity and challenges these specialties represent. By utilizing advanced surgical techniques, minimally invasive approaches, and innovative therapies, he aims to not only extend lives but also enhance the quality of life for patients.

Dr. Makris’ research interests include immunotherapy, targeted therapies and cancer tissue engineering.

He received a PhD in biomedical engineering at the University of California and his medical degree at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece. He completed residencies in general surgery at Stanford University and the University of California and a fellowship in complex general surgical oncology and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, followed by additional training at Seoul National University Hospital.

Outside of work, Dr. Makris prioritizes spending quality time with his family. They enjoy local parks, outdoor activities and creating lasting memories together. Other hobbies include hiking, biking, swimming and reading, especially books about art, history and science.
