Biography

“I believe to whom much is given, much will be required. I have been blessed in my life with many opportunities to give back and contribute to society, and I find it extremely gratifying to develop relationships with my patients and provide successful, surgical cancer care.”

Dr. Perry Shen is board certified in general surgery. He specializes in surgical oncology (cancer treatments) for conditions that include sarcomas, complex gastrointestinal cancers, peritoneal surface malignancies and liver, biliary and pancreatic tumors.

He chose his practice specialty because he enjoys the technical challenges and multidisciplinary collaborations that are part of cancer care for complex cases.

Dr. Shen is the program director for the Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship and the director of the Liver and Pancreas Surgery Program, both at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Additionally, he co-leads the gastrointestinal oncology disease group and is surgeon- in-chief for the Southeast region at Atrium Health Levine Cancer. He has been named a Business North Carolina Top Doctor and a Castle Connelly Top Doctor for multiple years.

He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

His research focuses on surgical outcomes in patients with hepatobiliary, pancreatic and peritoneal surface malignancies.

Dr. Shen received bachelor’s degrees in biology and sociology at the University of California. He received his medical degree at the University of Southern California, where he also completed residency. He completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at the John Wayne Cancer Institute.

He is married with 3 daughters. In his time away from work, he likes running to stay in shape and has run 5 marathons. As an avid college and professional basketball fan, Dr. Shen’s favorite teams to follow are the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and Los Angeles Lakers. He also enjoys reading, especially books by Stephen King.
