Biography

“A parent entrusting you with the care of their child is no small thing. I often tell parents, ‘For the next little bit, I get to share your job! I’ll care for them like they're one of mine.’”

Dr. Alan Woodruff is board certified in pediatric critical care medicine. He specializes in pediatric critical illness and injury.

He values working with a team of specialized pediatric providers from multiple disciplines to care for children who are seriously ill, injured or who have undergone major surgery. The focus of his team is not just to reverse or treat disease but to put children on the footing to thrive.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM).

Dr. Woodruff serves as the medical director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Brenner Children’s Hospital and as the medical director of the Malignant Hyperthermia Diagnostic Center at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. He is an associate professor of anesthesiology and of pediatrics, is a faculty member of the Critical Illness, Injury and Recovery Research Center at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and is an affiliate faculty of the Office of Global Health.

Additionally, he is a board member of the systemwide Atrium Health and Advocate Aurora Health Institutional Review Board. He holds leadership roles within the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) Post-PICU subgroup.

His research interests include long-term outcomes after pediatric critical illness and intensive care health service delivery.

Dr. Woodruff received his medical degree at the University of North Carolina. He completed residency in general pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Colorado, where he was chief resident, followed by fellowships in pediatric critical care at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard University.
