Many of the fragility fractures sustained by adults age 50 and older occur in the home. Although it’s not possible to prevent all falls, some simple measures can help reduce the risks of falling and suffering a broken bone.
- Remove trip hazards such as throw rugs, electric cords and clutter
- Place frequently used items within easy reach
- Use a step stool with handrails to reach upper shelves and other high places
- Place skid-proof backing on area rugs
- Secure all carpeting
- Avoid using slippery wax on hard-surface floors
- Install grab bars in the tub/shower and close to the toilet
- Use a bath seat with skid-proof legs or a non-skid rubber mat in the tub/shower
- Install and use handrails on both sides of stairwells
- Keep your home well lit
- Wear supportive shoes with non-skid soles
- Consider carrying a mobile phone so you can reach help if needed
